There are two major National Highways (NH) roads emanating from Kanyakumari town. One is the NH 7 that starts from the town and runs through Madurai and the other is the NH 47 that runs to Salem through Kerala, touching some important cities like Trivandrum, Kochi and Coimbatore.
The state-owned Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation is the major operator of bus services in the district, though licences are issued for specific routes to private operators.
Today, there are 3495.80 km of surfaced roads in the district.
The Airport Authority of India have proposed for an airport in Nanguneri.
NH47 is the main and important road which run from kanyakumari. 
Salem - Sankagiri - Chithode - Perundurai(Erode bypass) - Perumanallur - New Tirupur - Avinashi Coimbatore - Palakkad - Thrissur - Chalakudi - Kochi - Kollam - Trivandrum -
 NagercoilKanniyaKumari and the distance covered is 363 km (226 mi)

National Highway 47, commonly referred to as NH 47, is a 620 km (390 mi) long highway connecting the city of Salem to Kanyakumari town in southern India. The important towns connectedare  Salem, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur, Kochi, Alappuzha, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, Nagercoil and Kanyakumari.The NH 47 runs within a few kilometers of Coimbatore International Airport (within Coimbatore city limits), Cochin International Airport (Nedumbassery) and the Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) International Airport.

National Highway 7 or NH 7 (New NH 44) , is major North-South National Highway in India that runs through the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. NH-7 was laid and is maintained by Central Public Works Department (CPWD).
The highway connects several important Indian cities such as:-
 Varanasi, Rewa, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Kurnool, Bangalore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul,Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli and kanniyakumari. A major part of NH 7 covers the North-South Corridor of NHDP and it is officially listed as running over 2,369 km (1,472 mi) from Varanasi to Kanyakumari. It is the longest national highway in India. As per the recent rationalization of Highway numbers this is renamed as NH 44.
NH7 is one of the important road that connects to kanyakumari From Karnataka Border - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Namakkal - Karur - Dindigul - Madurai - Virudunagar - Sattur - Kovilpatti - Tirunelveli - Nanguneri - Vattakottai up to Kanniya Kumari and it covered the total distance of 627 km (390 mi)
