Kanyakumari - REAL FACTS...

                                                         Kanyakumari is one of the best administrative districts of Tamil Nadu State located in the southern most region of the state. The district shares common boundary with Tirunelveli District on the North and east. The South Eastern boundary is the Gulf of Mannar. On the South and the South West, the boundaries are the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. On the West and North West it is bounded by Kerala state.

The district offers undulating valleys and plains between the mountainous terrain and the sea - coast, so closely interwoven with Temples and Churches and other edifices which are of great tourist importance.

By Air : The nearest airport to Kanyakumari is Thiruvnanthapuram (Kerala State), 87 km from the district head quarter town.

By Rail : There are two rail junctions close to Kanyakumari town. Kanyakumari Junction is 1 km from Central Bus Stand and Nagercoil Junction is 2 km away from Anna Bus Stand.

By Road : Kanyakumari is well connected by roads with important parts of Tamil Nadu and its neighbouring states. The bus stands located in the town include Kanyakumari – Central & Express Bus Stand, Nagercoil – Anna Bus Stand (Local Transport), Christopher Bus Stand (Other Districts).

                     One of the most popular tourist destinations in south India, Kanyakumari is a magnificent place for natural beauty and the scenic confluence of the 3 seas surrounding the country. The history of the place is deep rooted in mythology as there are many monuments and temples, standing as testimonies to the events that took place many centuries ago.

                             Another interesting aspect about Kanyakumari is the confluence of the 3 seas; the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. It has the unique distinction of being the only land which comes under such topography of being a meeting point for more than 2 seas.

                            Also called as Cape Comorin, Kanyakumari was once ruled by the Cheras, Cholas and the Pandyas. The architectural beauty of the temples is attributed to these rulers. Another interesting aspect about Kanyakumari is its name, which it got from the Goddess Kumari Amman. It is said that the Goddess was supposed to marry Lord Shiva, but she could not marry him and vowed to remain a virgin all her life. The princess Kanya Devi being a virgin Goddess; hence the name Kanyakumari! The best time to visit is in the winters from November to February.

                             The famous tourist spots include the Vivekananda Memorial which is located at about 400 meters from the mainland in the sea and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, where once the ashes of the great leader were held for public viewing. The Tiruvalluvar statue is the biggest in the country and is of special importance to the people of Tamil Nadu as he was a great scholar during those times. Another exciting fact about Kanyakumari is the Sunrise and Sunset. The place is well known for the picturesque view of the sun setting and rising from the Sea, which makes for a pleasant view for any nature lover.
