Kanyakumari - Famous Food Recipe - Coconut Rice..-Part-5


Coconut Rice is one of the most popular food items in Kanyakumari. It is in fact the most preferred one, since coconuts are cultivated over here at a large number. There are several ingredients that are used to prepare this dish. Almost all those ingredients remain available in the Kanyakumari markets throughout the year so people don't face any difficulty to make Coconut Rice. The ingredients are as follows:



  • Rice





  • Coconut





  • Mustard seeds





  • Green chilies





  • Cashew nut





  • Bengal Gram





  • Red chilies





  • Salt





  • Water





  • Oil

    The procedure that is needed to be followed while preparing Coco Rice is mentioned in the paragraph below.

    First wash and soak the adequate amount of rice. Then add salt to it and give heat to the soaked rice by pouring it into the boiling water. Thereafter grate the coconut and heat the Oil and fried cashew nut. The ingredients of Coconut Rice of Kanyakumari also include grams and spices that need to be fried.     Kanyakumari - Famous Food Recipe - FISH CURRY (Meen Kolambu)- Part-4

    Meen Kolambu is one of the favorite foods of Kanyakumari. Meen Kolambu or fish curry is a non-vegetarian dish. To prepare this dish, one will require fresh fish and an array of condiments. Meen Kolambu can be served with the main meal of the day. This dish can be served with rice.

    Kanyakumari recipes are easy to prepare. To cook Meen Kolambu, first of all, fish is to be washed properly and to be marinated with limejuice and salt. In the mean time, garlic, ginger, poppy seeds, grated coconut and tomatoes should be blended together. To save time, it is better to keep aside the separated pulp of Tamarind after soaking it in water for sometime.

    In a pan, oil is to be heated. Then, onions should be stirred till it turns golden brown. Mustard seeds, chilly powder, coriander leaves and turmeric powder are to be added and stirred with the onions. After some time, grated coconut, salt and Tamarind water to be added. Sufficient amount of water is to be added to these ingredients. Once the ingredients come to a boil, fish cut in small pieces, are to be put in the pan. Now sprinkle a little amount of cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds as decoration, and Meen Kolambu is ready to be served.


    Ingredients for Meen Kolambu

    • Fish 800 gm
    • Coconut 225 gm
    • Ginger 1 piece
    • Garlic 6 pod
    • Onion 350 gm
    • Tomato 450 gm
    • Lime Juice 2 nos
    • Poppy seeds 6 top
    • Mustard seeds ¼ top
    • Tamarind 2 top
    • Coriander Powder 1 Teaspoon
    • Curry Leaves
    • Cumin Seeds - ¾ Teaspoon
    • Fenugreek Seeds - ¾ Teaspoon
    • Chili powder 2 Teaspoon
    • Oil ½ cup
    • Salt

    Kanyakumari - Famous Food Recipe - SEMIYA PAYASAM - Part-3

    Semiya Payaasam is a popular dessert prepared in Kanyakumari. This sweet dish is generally served after a meal. On the other hand, eating Payasaam is considered to be very auspicious by the Indians. The Kanyakumari recipe for Semiya Payaasam is very easy to prepare. At home, Semiya Payaasam can be prepared for the loved ones.


    Ingredients Required for Semiya Payaasam




  • Semiya or Vermicelli 55 gm





  • Fat 30 gm





  • Saffron one pinch





  • Milk 250 gm





  • Cashew nut 30 gm





  • Raisin 30 gm





  • Cardamom





  • Sugar 55 gm

    Semiya Payaasam is one of the favorite foods of Kanyakumari people. To prepare Semiya Payaasam at home, one needs to heat ghee or fat in a pan. In the melted fat, Semiya or Vermicelli is to be fried for sometime. In this same pan, required amount of milk is to be poured and it is kept until it comes to a boil. Before turning off the fire, sugar is to be added in the boiling milk. The mixture requires to be stirred occasionally until sugar completely melts in the milk.

    Then in another pan, raisins and cashew nuts are to be fried in ghee. The fried dry fruits are to be added to the Semiya Payaasam. Then crushed Cardamom is to be sprinkled over Payasaam for flavor and garnishing. Further garnishing to this dessert can be done with pinch of Saffron, raisin and cashew nuts. Semiya Payaasam can be served while it is hot or can be cooled by keeping it in a fridge for some hours before serving.

    Kanyakumari - Famous Food Recipe - Valakkai Porial - Part-2

    Valakkai Porial is one of the popular dishes of Kanyakumari. This dish is a preparation from vegetables. The basic ingredients of this South Indian dish are coconut and banana. This is a very simple dish and can be easily prepared at home for the near and dear ones.

    Kanyakumari recipes are very easy to cook and the procedure of cooking a dish of Valakkai Porial is not very time consuming. To prepare Valakkai Porial, one will require those ingredients that are easily available in the households.


    Ingredients Required for Valakkai Porial




  • 1/2 Coconut





  • 250 gm Raw Banana





  • Channa Dal-1/2 top





  • Urad Dal-1/2 top





  • Curry Leaves





  • 2 Onions





  • 3 Green Chilies





  • One pinch of Turmeric





  • Oil--2 tablespoon





  • 1/2 tablespoon of Mustard Seeds





  • Salt - according to taste

    Procedure to Prepare Valakkai Porial

    Foods of Kanyakumari are very tasty and they are prepared from very fresh and healthy products. To prepare Valakkai Porial, one is required to grate coconut. It should be kept aside for the time being. In the mean time the raw bananas are required to be peeled. The bananas should be cut into small cubes. In a pan, banana cubes are to be cooked, adding sufficient amount water. Salt to be added according to taste.

    In another pan, oil is to be heated. When oil in the pan is enough hot, Urad Dal is to be added, followed by Channa Dal. Green chilies and Turmeric powder are to be added in the ingredients in the pan. Lastly, grated coconut is to be added. A few Curry leaves are to be sprinkled for flavor and taste.
