Similarly there are quite a number of famous churches in the district. Some of them are claimed to have been built during the first century. St. Mary's Church, Assumption Church in Thiruvithancode, St. Xaviers Church in Kottar, C.S.I. Home Church in Nagercoil are a few tourist attraction.
The Catholic church's history in Kanyakumari can never be understood without reference to St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest who spent nearly 10 years during 1542 to 1552 in the coastal belt of Kanyakumari.He spread Christianity in the South East Coast and in the South West Coast among the fishing community. Our Lady of Ransom in Kanyakumari, St. Xaviers Church in Kottar, Kattadimalai or Devasahayam Church in Aralvoimozhi, St. Mary's Church in Thiruvithancode, Home Church in Nagercoil, London Mission Church in Mylaudy and CSI Church in Marthandam are historically important places where only the local people offer prayers.
With regard to Kanyakumari district, the Muslims visit Peer Mohammed Oliullah Dargah at Thuckalay, Bava Kasim Palli (Vembadi Gnanayar Apa Palli) in Kottar, Malik Mohammed mosque in Thiruvithancode and Thittuvilai Dargah.
